About
Wan-Tu-Wazuri, which means ‘beautiful people’ in Swahili, is a wrestling club in Oakland, CA. Founded by Ashlee Sherman and Sylvester Hodges in 1964, their goal was to bring guidance and provide life tools to inner city youth, through the sport of wrestling.
As one of those youth, coach Sherman exposed me and my brothers to travels and experiences that taught us what “a tough street kid” can really mean. Coach Sherman understood that the sport of wrestling is a great teacher, and could be a beacon of light within the inner city. Today, as a coach and clinician, I have grown to appreciate the noble life lessons of the sport.
We are excited to provide this unique event where wrestlers can learn world class techniques, and coaches can get helpful tips on various topics, strategies and how ‘winning comes in many flavors’. We look forward to seeing you! -Gerry Abas
